Detecting Bed Bugs in Hotel Rooms: The Traveler's Guide
The last thing on a person’s mind while traveling is that when they get to their destination, they need to check their surroundings—particularly the bed they’ll be sleeping in—for bed bugs.
What We Know About Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are expert hitchhikers. Female bed bugs can lay upwards of 500 eggs in their entire lifetime! All it takes is for one female to find her way onto an unsuspecting victim for her to be able to make a new home and create an entirely new infestation.
How to Detect Bed Bugs in Your Hotel Room
Here are a few tips to help you avoid being attacked by or accidentally picking up bed bugs:
- Do NOT put your bags/luggage on the bed or floor:
Store them in the bathtub or shower while you check for bed bugs.
Usually, when you first walk into a hotel room after a long day of travel, all you want to do is drop your bags, flop on the bed, and unwind. By setting your bags aside first, you’re already taking an essential first step in avoiding bringing one of these nasty bugs home.
- Check the Bed
Using a black light, be sure to examine the bed carefully. You'll want to inspect the headboard and nightstands, even peeking into the drawers. Check in and around any pillows, blankets, sheets, mattress padding, and finally, in the tight crevices of the mattress's lining.
- Check the furniture
What to Do If You Found Bed Bugs
Immediately alert the hotel staff and request a new room in the opposite wing. Also, check that room to make sure it is bed bug-free.
Even if you do not spot bed bugs, you can still travel with peace of mind by packing travel protection such as travel spray, natural bed bug killer traps, and luggage encasements to help keep your luggage safe from these invaders and ensure you don’t bring such an unwanted souvenir home.
